The History of Eastern Woods Research

Chances are if you are here you already know part of the story, but for those of you new to EWR Bikes, here is how the story begins. 

In the late 1980s there was a student at Penn State University attending classes to become a mechanical engineer.  This student already had a successful background in BMX racing and was interested in taking his love of bicycles and creating a career out of it.  Mountain biking had just started growing on the east coast a few years before, and he found himself more and more riding his mountain bike than any of his other bikes.  He loved that he could get on his mountain bike and go out for long trips through the mountains surrounding Happy Valley and spend entire days in the woods exploring trails and mountains and bunny hopping logs across the trail.  He was also getting started with a newly recognized sport in the US called Trialsin.

This student was Jay de Jesus.  As talented of a rider as Jay was, he was limited by the equipment available to him.  Most of the mountain bikes of the late eighties were designed in and around California and then shipped around the world.  So he took his knowledge of mechanical engineering and put pen to paper.  Soon afterwards, he came up with a unique design that to this day is worshipped around the globe.... He called it the Hairy Eyeball, but soon changed it to "the Original Woods Bike".
