Owners Bikes

We've collected some emails and some pics of vintage EWR's.  OWBs, E-Motions, B2s, and Mettels - Oh My!

Here we go...

Jamie's 2009 OWB29er w/ Lefty fork

What?

Chris' pair of EWR'sChris is one of the rare few that has a new and a vintage EWR's.  Here's the new:2008 OWB with custom paint. Pretty! And the vintage:Nineteen ninety somthing Emotion with custom paint. Also pretty!Lucky bugger. Here's his Ride Review on the new OWB:

First ride review. Somewhat short ride on South Mountain. Still
adjusting here and there.... brakes etc......

Fast, very fast and very fast climbing. Could be the hardtail sure,
but the last few times I ran the Element locked to get used to
hardtail.

Wheelies like crazy yes ... ewr....of course.

Takes Turns faster, I burned through every sharp turn faster and
exited faster. Enough to notice and feel it. The bike just held
without turning the back end sliding out. I found myself confidently
leaning in more.

Feels bigger, the difference in length is noticeable. Not as twitchy
as the old one. Probably a good thing for everyone. Still fickable?-
absolutely, up and over everything. Basically I see it as EWR style
with the slight geometry tweak to go faster and feel slightly more
stable quicker. Not stretched out by any means, just slightly
different. I was wheelie dropping off bolders with ease.

Check the tires out -interesting set up. The rear is a low profile
but with the tread just enough to not slide out. The front is a more
traditional (dart) type tread. I like it. 2.35's, this thing should
fly with 2.0 or 2.1 on it.

Overall, sweet. Very in control and lot's of fun to ride.
Looking forward to being on it more and really getting the groove on—

getting a better sense of the bike and how it handles. It's only the
first ride!

NOTE OF INTEREST: Chris is actually the genius who did the EWR catalog back in the 90's and the new designs too.

Cool huh?

Eric's bizz-ike.
From Eric (Jay's brother):
heres a pic of my bike up in maine after riding some trails near acadia natl park.
i messengered in philly on this one for a year or more. thanks to sibling nepotism, jay was able to lay this bike on me for below market value. it replaced my really original ewr woods bike that some scumbag ripped off while i was dropping a tag (delivering something) at 15th and sansom. the thief actually ripped a stop sign pole out of the concrete to get it. i was bummed to say the least. and it still hasnt surfaced. some oblivious individual probably bpought it off  a crackhead for $20...
anyway, i hope people realize that not only does the ewr design excell on tricky east coast trails, but also in the dangerous urban environment that messengers thrive in. i pulled so many close calls and shot thru so many holes, on glorious summer days as well as frozen, icy winter days, on my EWRs. all my road bike and track bike compatriots would have found thermselves on car hoods, or under them.
there's nothing like an EWR running full on SLICKS!!!!!

Info on Eric can be found at Easy Subculture.

Look for this Biker Chic on the Dual Slalom circuit. Amy picked up her OWB and set it up for DS with an amazing parts mix.  Including the new Avid Juicy Ultimate brakes in blue, white DT rims, blue Chris King hubs / headset, and matching blue seat collar and quick releases.

Amy picked up her bike on 7.04.08 and entered her first Dual Slalom race on 7.05.08 at Plattekill.  She has an amazing handling skills and a killer competitive streak.  She was really focused on her task and took second.  We're really proud of you, Amy.  Congratulations!Something tells me we are going to be switching all that blue out for gold soon. Here's a look at her medal.

Do you know this smiling man?

It's Karl Rosengarth from Dirt Rag.  Here's why he's smiling so big:

Karl's 95 E-Motion B2 Singlespeed
In its current incarnation, my 1995 EWR (medium frame, serial number: EWR-RF-95-1120) sports a singlespeed conversion via a White Industries ENO eccentric hub. With a 80mm Fox fork up front the BB sits around 13.5" off the trail. Combine that with a Hone crankset with built in rock guard (sans small ring), and you have a log-hopping, monster truck of a hardtail.

I was a bit concerned that the 80mm fork might slow down the handling too much, but the bike is still flashbulb quick in the singletrack and totally flickable. In fact, the fork seems the perfect match. Ceramic rims provide solid braking, in wet or dry conditions. Old skool Kore stem for style points and proper reach.

I've included a few "action hero" shots of me racing the bike at the 2008 SSUSA race in Tennessee. I railed the twisty singletrack and climbed like a scalded monkey. What a blast racing this bike! Much respect.

We'd like to thank Mr. Justin Steiner, also from Dirt Rag, for the use of these pics.

Niels 2008 OWB

Niels was our first overseas customer. He's from Tyrol, Austria.

In this second (minute) my EWR (Niels the Austrian Shredder) is built complete. See the pictures with this e-mail for your EWR Page and you will get some nice Action Shots from my local Alpine Trails in a few weeks. Now I have a beer and when I have my first ride with this fine machine!

Thanks Niels,
PS: keep the good times rolling; greetings from Tyrol!

Bud's 2008 OWB

"Thanks for the incredible design, the bike is just awesome on the singletrack, climbs and technical sections.  You feel in complete control of each twist and turn.  My sincere appreciation to all involved.  I would highly recommend this bike to anyone.  Looking forward to seeing the new 29er."  Bud Mauger

Check out the cool custom powder coating he had done on the fork, matching grips and the custom color pedals.  Now that is attention to detail!

Harry's 97 E-Motion

Kenn,

This is my cousin's 97 E-Motion that I had told you about.  Size Large.  He finally made the decision to change over his parts from his current (beloved) hardtail and to build this one up!  I'm excited for him.

His name is Harry.  He lives right near French Creek.

Anyway.  I'll forward a close-up of the downtube.  The paint is original.  Right down to the Fresh Frame sticker, just like mine.

The serial number is    EWR RF 153 21-4-97

I don't know about you, but I'm glad the time change took place!   Makes it seem like spring is just around the corner and riding time begins!

Talk to you soon!

Eric

Michael's Bicyles

Here's what Michael said:

Hey guys,

Welcome back to EWR!!!  I was so excited when I saw Kenn's post on
ObservedTrials.net.  This is just awesome!

I've included pictures of both of my EWR frames.  One is (obviously) my E-Motion XC bike.  The serial number is EWR-RF-124-7-95.  You will notice that I setup for a bit more trialsy riding with the hydraulic brakes and bash ring.  Still, it's a great street bike and commuter, too.

Jay will recognize the other frame as one his earlier "mod" frames.  It has a BMX size headtube, seat tube and rear axle spacing but a MTB size BB.  A friend of mine who welds helped me make an adapter for the stem so that I could run MTB risers.  I rode it in the Sport class for a couple seasons and won the NEPS Sport Championship on it.  My welder friend and I took what we learned from it to make two of our own mod frames which I used to win the NEPS Expert Championship.

I thought I would let you know what I'm up to now.  I moved to Nashville in 2002 to get married and stopped competing in the northeast.  Since there were no events down here, I started my own.  I hooked up with the, previously motorcycly only, Trials Training Center and have been hosting annual events there ever since.  I've also done events at the Ocoee Whitewater Center and the Nantahala Outdoor Center, not to mention a number of demos and clinics.  In 2005, I took over the USA Cycling Trials Team Manager position from JP Sickler and took a five-rider team to the UCI World Championships in Livigno, Italy.  We also sent a team to New Zealand in 2006 but I sent Zak Maeda as my sub since my daughter was born that same week.  I returned last year to be manager of a four-rider team at the Worlds in Fort William, Scotland.  I also became the US delegate for the BIU in 2007 and took over as the head of the North American Trials Series (NATS) when Tim Williamson moved on to another role.

Paul's Original Woods Bike

Attached are a few pictures of my EWR.  I love this bike!  It really changed the way I rode.  I was able to go faster on downhills and clean technical parts that previously gave me problems.  Whether it was really the bike or just the new bike feel, it stuck with me.

A few years ago I contacted Jay about putting a disc tab on it.  I was hesitant to do it because I didn't want to change the bike but he said to go for it.  It has made a huge difference.  The better the brakes, the faster you can go!

My wife bought the frame from a friend who bought it from Jay when he closed up shop.  My friend never would sell it to me but my wife finally convinced him to sell it since it was too small for him but would fit me great.  Hopefully I can convince her I need the next generation frame too.

Paul

Hey Paul, I have to say that the frame changed the way we ride too.  We're glad we were able to pass that along to you.  Aren't bikes cool?

Nate's B2 E-Motion Race Frame

It was August of ’96.  I just received my new EWR E-motion B2 build from Jay.  What a day!  State of the art with custom paint with full XTR and Ringle hubs.  My first custom mtn bike!  I certainly got my use out of it living in the hills of Northern California , just north of Mammoth.  Since then, it has seen many rebuilds.  From a 22# XC rig to an even lighter single speed.  The frame is still something to be admired.  High bottom bracket, low standover, and 16” chainstays (!!!) all come together for a ride that is snappy, supple, and just down right FUN!!!  With a renewed interest in trials, it will be rebuilt shortly, playful as ever.  I can’t wait!  Congrats to the EWR crew for bringing back something that embodies all of our pleasure to just get out and ride!

Well, Nate, we're glad to be back!  Thanks for the photos, and don't forget to send new pics of the re-build.

James' Original Woods Bike

Great to see you guys getting the gig going again!  You have a good many followers out there, as Im sure you know.  I get a load of questions from folks about my Original Woods just about everywhere I go.

I met you at Interbike Philly in 94, I believe it was, and bought the attached white frame from you just a few weeks later.  The bike has served me very well, has been built up in Four distinct iterations over the years, has never been refinished (although I have used more Toyota touch-up paint on it than on my Tacoma!), and is currently set up as my twisty single speed toy.  I love it and Id never let it go.  You all should be commended for your original designs, your continued vision, and your determination to reintroduce the breed.  Put me on the list for a Large Woods, and let me know when and how I can close the deal.   After owning my first EWR frame for 13 or so years, Im thinking this time I just might be a little more inventive with the colors than just white with red logosmaybe Celeste Green?   Maybe white is lucky?  Hmmmto dream.

Put me on your mailing list for updates, and Ill do my part by checking back to your site for new details.  Again, good work, fellasGood Work!!

James

Note: James is the proud owner of a shiny new EWR OWB.  We're looking forward to seeing them both side by side.

Kris' Original Woods Bike Single Speed Conversion

Here are a few pics of Kris' Original Woods Bike, ser. # R-HE-119-7-94, converted to a single speed.  Below are before and after shots of the disc brake upgrade.

Before.....

After....

From another angle....

Here's what Kris had to say:

Mine actually came to me by accident-literally. I had wanted one for quit some time (naturally as all stories go right?).  But had been working at a popular bicycling magazine and got a discount on a steel Voodoo Bizango.  I was back on steel and loving it.  But one fateful afternoon, up on south mountain i somehow snapped the headtube right off leaving me in a heap, still clipped in to the rest of the bike while the other half was now behind me!  I was heart broken, and had to walk with the rest of the bike down the mountain much like a wheelbarrow.

Shortly thereafter I found another frame and it matched up to the voodoo well, and was cheap as someone was getting rid of it. I built it up and no sooner after that happened, I found a website (mtbr classifieds) and began to peruse the frames..  When there it was!!  A medium, black EWR Original Woods Frame!!  I was no where near a phone, didn't have a cell phone and proceeded to jump into my car, and speed home to the land line to call this guy in Delaware.  When he answered he stated "well that was quick!!  I literally just put that thing up there!"

Two weeks later I had it in my hands - "a cool piece of weaponry as ever i did see."  (to quote A Christmas Story, if you please)

It took a few tweaks to get the build just right-but when that happened I can't explain it- I had the biggest smile on my face as I ripped down singletrack, off of rocks and over logs.  Jay's bikes are fast, nimble and a complete blast to ride.  So it all worked out in the end; an accident lead me to riding bliss!

Thought you'd appreciate that.

Best-
Kris

Ed's Titanium E-Motion Race Frame

May we present the legendary, amazing, historic - the one and only - Titanium EWR E-Motion Race frame.  Proudly owned by Mr. Ed.   This bike took him to a 2nd place finish in the 24hours of Allamuchy in the Pro Elite class back in 1999. Pretty impressive. I've heard people say "it's not the bike, it's the rider".  I think in this case it's the bike.  (just kidding Ed)

This isn't a good pic at all, but these welds are sweet!

Here's a pic from the  EWR Reunion at Ted's Jump Jam on 11.4.2007. Man, we need to take some photography courses.....

Wish you could get your hands on this bike?  Don't even bother asking....  But if you want to try your luck, ask him by going to www.guaranteedfun.com.

Good Luck!

Jeff's Happy Couple

Just plain nice.

Most of us search around for years and are lucky enough to stumble upon one EWR, some of us were smart enough to hold onto our original bikes.  Few of us are lucky enough to own two!

Here are a few pics of Jeff's Hapy Couple.  His Original Woods Bike and his E-Motion.

Here's what Jeff had to say:

I am very pleased to see the return of EWR!

Here are some pics of my 2 that I would love to see on the new site. I am sorry I cannot read the serial #'s in my dark basement at the moment. I believe the yellow Original Woods is a 1994 and that it was used by Jay and Chris Van Dine in competition? I think the orange B2 Race is from the last batch, if I remember correctly it has a "97" in the serial #.

Jeff

Eric's Original Woods Bike

Eric sent these pics to us of his 97 Original Woods Bike.  We don't know much about the story behind it, but hopefully he'll let us know more soon.  And maybe he'll pair this one up with a new one too?

A picture is worth a thousand words.  The one that comes to mind when I look at this picture is strong.

Here's a shot of Eric about to throw a backflip barspin off the see-saw at White Clay.  Most of you have probably seen him do this off a curb though.  Eric's got mad skills...

Charlie's E-Motion

Charlie was kind enough to stop out and see us at Bikeworks on 12.23 and we got to spend some time with him.  Here's a few pics of his 94 E-Motion in incredible condition.  Except the fork.....  This was originally purchased from Mr. Ed in 1994, and it was decked out!  Club Roost bars, Avid CNC'd brake levers, KORE stem, Onza climbing bars, Cook Brothers skewers, X-Ray Shifters, Gore Cables, Syncros post.... Check it.

Fran's Original Woods Bike

Here's a couple of pics of Fran's Original Woods Bike, circa 1995. Here's what Fran had to say:

Wow...I can't believe EWR is back.  Now maybe I don't have to explain to everyone about my bike.

I ordered my woods bike back in '95 from Bikesport (late fall-early winter) and I had to drive an 1 1/2 hours from Red Bank NJ to get there, but it's been worth it.  It's the only mountain bike I've owned since then.

Unfortunately, mine doesn't have a serial # on it but it is a size small,  was painted in the speckled red and gold job, and I had the headtube adjusted for suspension..(the e-motion bikes had this at the time, but not the woods bike.)

Almost two years ago I had disc tabs put on it and repainted ( with reproduced decals).  If I had known the brand was coming back...I might have waited.  Now maybe I can finally get a EWR t-shirt or a jersey.  I 'll be checking the site for news.

Good luck,

Fran
